Tips for Brushing Teeth Bend OR

Little girl smiling and learning tips for brushing from Aesthetic Dentistry of Bend in Bend, OR
Oral hygiene is crucial for keeping your mouth healthy, helping to prevent a myriad of oral health complications. There are many components involved in oral hygiene, including brushing. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily for at least two full minutes each time. These habits are important for everyone, including children. As a parent, however, you know just how difficult it can be to get your child to brush even just once a day. At Aesthetic Dentistry of Bend - Thomas E. Wold, DMD, we can help your child to develop good brushing habits with the following tips.

Brush Together

We get it. Brushing can be boring. However, as boring as it is for an adult, imagine how it must seem to a child. You can make it a little more fun by brushing your teeth alongside your child. In addition to giving them some company, you can show your child exactly how to brush their teeth. They can watch you, or you can let them practice on their teeth. For younger children, make sure that after they brush, you go over their teeth to clean any areas they may have missed. As a bonus, the extra brushing sessions can help to improve your oral health as well.

Brushing Books

There are all kinds of books for kids, including books that teach children the importance of brushing as well as proper brushing techniques. These types of books have stories that are easy for your child to understand and are accompanied by bright illustrations. If you have not already, add a brushing book or two to your bookshelf and break them out when it is time to brush.

Download a Brushing App

If you have a smart device, you know that there are apps for just about everything. There are even apps designed specifically for brushing. They can be as simple as a two-minute timer or an app that plays music to help make the two minutes more fun. If you do not have a smart enabled device or do not want to download an app, you can check online for songs to sing while your child brushes. There are plenty of brushing-specific songs that are sung in tune with many popular kid songs.

Make it an Adventure

As we have already established, brushing can be boring for your child. You can help to make the habit more fun by turning the act into a great adventure. Your child can be the hero. With the help of their toothbrush sidekick, your child can battle and defeat the evil plaque and bacteria to save the teeth from harm.

Take Your Child Shopping

If you have ever really taken a look at the toothbrushes in the oral care aisle, you may have noticed that the toothbrushes for kids are available in all kinds of bright, colorful options. Many have popular cartoon characters on them. Instead of grabbing a brush for your child, let them pick one out. This freedom to choose their very own toothbrush, your child may be much more likely to want to use it regularly.

Working with your child to develop good brushing habits is important for helping them to keep their mouth healthy and prevent the risk of periodontal disease later in life. If you need additional help, call Aesthetic Dentistry of Bend - Thomas E. Wold, DMD at (541) 389-0261 today.
