Dangers of Neglecting Dental Care during Pregnancy

Did you know that you are in a vulnerable state when you are pregnant and neglect your oral health? During pregnancy, you need more nutrients and must take extra care to support a regular program of brushing and flossing. Otherwise, you stand the chance of getting gum disease and its related dental health problems. Therefore, make sure you visit our office for cleanings and exams during your pregnancy.
Why Is Dental Health So Important during Pregnancy?
When women are pregnant, they increase their chances of forming cavities. Part of the reason for this is that the body produces more hormones, or estrogen and progesterone. As a result, a woman's risk increases for forming cavities or getting gum disease. Moreover, a change in eating habits can impact the health of gums and teeth. Women who are pregnant may eat more of certain foods, such as sweets or processed foods, that can more easily damage the teeth.
Why Regular Brushing and Flossing Should Be Practiced
During pregnancy, women may tend to brush or floss less as well, as their gums may be sore or tender. However, brushing and flossing should still be performed. Using a gentle approach and rinsing the mouth with lukewarm salt water can help. Also, brushing and flossing may be overlooked if women are tired. Some of our pregnant patient's state that they tend to feel nauseous, at times, when they brush their teeth.
That is why we want you to call us when you run into any problems with dental care during pregnancy. You should still keep your regular appointments for cleaning and exams. Make sure you have x-rays taken as well. X-raying the teeth is safe during this time, as we use protective coverings. Don't increase your risk of developing cavities, gingivitis, or periodontal disease. Make routine dental care a habit during prenatal care and after delivery.
